Thompson Coburn LLP currently has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Paralegal Manager in our St. Louis office to manage and provide guidance to our paralegals, practice area assistants, and litigation clerks Firm-wide.

For this exempt position we are seeking applicants with at least five years of experience managing paralegals in a law firm setting, with five or more years of prior paralegal experience managing client caseloads and dockets. Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor degree, with experience in at least one of the following areas preferred: human resource administration, technology, financial management, and preparation of statistical reporting. The person selected for this position must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibilities
Manages paralegals, practice area assistants and litigation clerks in all offices of the Firm.
Provides guidance to paralegals, practice area assistants and litigation clerks in maintaining appropriate workloads.
Provides paralegals and/or other Practice Support Services (PSS) staff coverage for ongoing client matter demands and special project requirements.
Evaluates, screens and recommends candidates for hire in all offices of the Firm and participates in onboarding processes for paralegals, practice area assistants and litigation clerks.
Conducts 90-day evaluations and administers annual performance reviews of paralegals, practice area assistants and litigation clerks.
Manages payroll timekeeping system by pay period for paralegals, practice area assistants and litigation clerks, including administration of overtime approval and other time and payroll policies.
Interacts regularly with PSS staff and attorneys to ensure resources, skills and training programs are aligned with practice area needs.
Analyzes productivity reports on a monthly basis and during the annual review process and communicates with paralegals, practice area assistants and litigation clerks to promote efficient and optimal utilization of PSS staff.
Conducts disciplinary actions, counseling and terminations in coordination with the Director of Associate Recruiting and Legal Support Services and Human Resources.
Assists Director of Associate Recruiting and Legal Support Services with preparing and analyzing financial and statistical analyses of profitability metrics.
Recommends and develops training and professional development programs for better performance and utilization of PSS staff.
Assists Director of Associate Recruiting and Legal Support Services with preparing departmental budget.
Recommends, develops, implements and oversees policies and procedures for PSS staff.
Assists Director of Associate Recruiting and Legal Support Services with special projects.
Networks with peer firms and participates in professional organizations to remain current on industry best practices.

Job Requirements
Must possess a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills so as to be able to work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence. Required to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
Must have ability to read, write and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone.
Must possess attention to detail, ability to balance multiple projects and have strong time management skills.
Must have ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered.
Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.
This is a full time position which requires working in the office a minimum of 40 hours on a regular basis. Oftentimes it may include working outside of normal business hours to ensure completion of position requirements.
Ability to travel if necessary.
The physical demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee in order for him or her to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the work day, having the ability to transport 20 pounds and being able to operate a computer and other business equipment found in the office.
